How we calculate
From ground to grocery, we track the environmental footprint of all Made From Stone™ products. We account for every step along the way: the extraction of raw materials, the electricity used in manufacturing, and the emissions from transporting the finished product.
These calculations are based on Okeanos’ Carbon Methodology with the additional support of OpenLCA and environmental database Ecoinvent.
Note that the current assessment is limited to analyzing the Global Warming Potential (GWP), which is the carbon dioxide equivalent of the greenhouse effect of atmospheric gases. The results from this assessment will lead to process and material improvements, in accordance with the company goals to minimize our environmental impacts throughout the product lifecycle, and to develop supporting literature for all interested parties.
Why the number changes depending on where you are
The carbon figure on a product page has two parts.
The first is the product’s own footprint — the materials it is made from and the energy used to manufacture it. This part is fixed. It is the same figure wherever in the world the product ends up.
The second is an estimate of transport. We map the product’s journey as far as we can trace it, through raw material sourcing, processing, manufacturing and the last distribution or printing stop. Beyond that point, individual retail destinations are not traceable across our supply chain — we cannot know which of thousands of stores a particular product reached. So we estimate the remaining distance from that last traced point to the place where you scan the QR code.
This means the percentage you see is specific to where you are standing. The same product scanned in another country will show a different figure, because the product travelled further to reach you. Both numbers are calculated the same way; only the final distance differs.

What the transport estimate includes, and what it does not
Transport emissions use a blended average of truck, rail, ship and air freight rather than a mode-by-mode calculation for each leg of the journey. We are working toward greater granularity here.
Distances are measured as direct routes between points rather than actual roads, rail lines, shipping lanes or flight paths. Real journeys are longer than direct routes, so the transport estimate is lower than the true figure and the percentage shown is slightly higher.
Your approximate location is used only to calculate that final distance. It is not stored and is not used for any other purpose.
What the percentages are compared against
All percentages shown are reductions in comparison to the previous packaging the product replaced. They are not comparisons against an industry average, a theoretical alternative, or a competitor product.
By using our Made From Stone™ compounds, we significantly reduce the plastic content in final products. Replacing a portion of plastic with calcium carbonate allows us to precisely measure the reduction in plastic use.
Our trademark “Made from Stone™” reflects the use of stone-based materials in final products. While not entirely made of stone, products incorporate this material in different percentages. The included QR code allows you to verify the stone content and environmental impact. We prioritize transparency and accuracy, adhering to all consumer protection standards.
