In the February edition of Set in Stone, we’re looking at some positive moves in the manufacturing industry and highlighting our biodegradation capabilities.

OKEANOS ® BUSINESS NEWSLETTER – February 2023

Finally, some positive news in the field of plastics! Some of the world’s largest producers, including manufacturing giants like 3M and Interplast, have committed to phasing out PFAs – the harmful chemicals included in their products.

While we’re encouraged by the news that these major manufacturers are taking action against PFAs, they are still prevalent in products we use every day. Okeanos is proud to say that products Made From Stone™ do not and have not ever contained any harmful PFAs chemicals.

Widely used since the 1940’s per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAs, are hard-to-break-down chemicals often used as processing aids. They’ve been found in everything from wrappers at your favorite fast-food chain to sanitary products, to popular brands of canned seltzer. From there, they’ve made their way into our water supplies, air, and soil causing build-up and health problems in humans and animals.

Humans use 5 trillion plastic bags per year! That’s over 700 plastic bags a year for every single person on the planet. What if…those bags could be made with less than half the plastic and significantly less CO2 emissions?

We make it possible today. Shopping bags Made From Stone are lightweight, floatable, and flexible, while still maintaining excellent barrier properties and tensile strength. It’s safe to say, if you make your bags from stone, you’ve got sustainability in the bag!

Did you know that unsustainable patterns of consumption and production are the root cause of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution? In this issue of Set In Stone, we’re breaking down Okeanos’ commitment to Sustainable Development Goal #12: Responsible Consumption and Production.

With SDG #12 , the UN hopes to encourage companies to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle.

At Okeanos, we are going a step beyond that by measuring the environmental impacts of every product with our comparative LCAs and sharing that information with customers via our product QR codes. We recognize that product information labeling is important in being transparent to the customer and to help them consume responsibly.

This month we’re recognizing Bruno Marchese, our Marketing Analyst as Rockstar of the Month! Read on to learn about how Bruno found Okeanos and what lifts him to new heights.

Tell us what this recognition means to you!

I am very happy to receive it since it is not only a recognition of the effort made in my daily tasks but also of the hard work done by the team that I belong to.

What gets you out of bed in the morning?

What gets me out of bed every day is knowing that I belong to a company that cares about our planet. Knowing that I am contributing with a grain of sand so that my grandchildren live in a better world, is something that pushes me to give my best every day.

What advice would you give to those entering the field of Sustainability?

I would tell them that it is a field which we all have to be a part since each one of us has the possibility of generating a positive impact on our environment.

If you could switch jobs with someone else at Okeanos, who would it be and why?

I wouldn’t change my job or the team I’m a part of, because I love what I do. But if I had to do it, I would do it with someone from the innovation department to understand how it is possible that such incredible things that can generate such a great impact on the world where we live, are possible.

What’s something about you that not many people know?

I dedicated 13 years of my life to aviation; I am a professional pilot. Today I fly as a hobby. And I had the opportunity to be a professional basketball player here in Argentina for 5 years, while I was starting my university studies.
