In 2008, Ecuador’s government wrote into law the belief that “nature has rights,” and that preservation and conservation should be prioritized.

Since then, the Ecuadorian government has stayed true to their word, proactively aligning with innovative technologies like Okeanos, to achieve their goals.

Since the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Environment on the world stage at COP27 this past November, Okeanos has been busy working alongside our partners in the government to continue to build a fully local ecosystem using local stone and local Ecuadorian compounders to present a truly sustainable, affordable solution to Ecuadorian brands. These local ecosystems not only create local jobs and boost the green economy, but also reduce costs and emissions associated with transportation.

Did you know that Made From Stone™ technology is a drop-in solution across traditional manufacturing processes including thermoforming, injection, extrusion and blow molding, and films? Customers around the world are already using Made From Stone technology to reduce the amount of plastic in everything from bottles to bags and dramatically lower their carbon footprint.

But that’s not all! Products Made From Stone boast strong barrier properties, excellent printing and sealing, and can be formulated to comply with different end-of-life scenarios based on where they’ll be used.

Across North America, recycling is on fire…and not in a good way. According to fire suppression company, Fire Rover, 2022 was the worst year ever for waste management fires in the US and Canada. Will 2023 be any better?

Unfortunately, it doesn’t look that way. Since January 2023, enormous fires at recycling facilities In Indiana, New Jersey and Florida have led to evacuations of thousands and concerns over air quality issues due to exposure to toxic chemicals. Experts believe that a buildup of combustible materials including petrochemically derived plastics, combined with sparks from lithium-ion batteries (which should only be recycled at specific facilities) and increasing temperatures are to blame.

So how do we prevent these events from happening in the future? We need to re-think our material feedstocks. Made From Stone technology replaces most of the petrochemically derived plastic with an inorganic bio-renewable nonflammable mineral.

At the end of April, the US released a draft of the country’s National Strategy to Prevent Plastic Pollution. Dive in with us!

This new strategy, which is still in the draft phase, is predicated on reducing plastic at the point of manufacture, which is firmly in line with our core belief here at Okeanos. Made From Stone technology makes it possible to “turn off the tap” of plastic flowing into the environment by reducing the amount of resin in our compounds at the source.

The new strategy also focuses on incorporating more post-consumer recycled content into the products we use every day. While circular solutions are well-intended, the use of PCR is simply not as effective at eliminating plastic from entering our environments and ecosystems as source reduction.

As John Hocevar, Ocean Campaign Director at Greenpeace explains, “Turtles and whales do not care how much recycled content is in the plastic waste that chokes them to death. The chemical additives in plastic packaging, including known carcinogens and bio-disrupters, will still harm people’s health whether the package is recyclable or not.”

Okeanos is committed to our focus on source reduction, while working to ensure products made with less plastic can be processed in recycling streams to extend their useful lives.
