OKEANOS ® BUSINESS NEWSLETTER – June 2024
Do good things always come in small packages? Not necessarily…
Commonly made of multiple materials layered to create barrier properties, sachets store everything from seasonings to detergent powder, making them convenient and popular in lower-income countries. Produced by a variety of consumer goods giants like Unilever, Nestlé, and Procter & Gamble, sachets, are typically lined with a metalized layer or coating to enhance barrier properties.
While this metalized layer guarantees protection to the product inside, it also guarantees these tiny packages will not be recycled, since they now contain multiple materials that need to be sorted into different recycling streams.
Despite pledges to reduce plastic in packaging, global brands have yet to make meaningful changes to their sachet problem. By 2027, it’s estimated that 1.3 trillion sachets will be sold globally, and that number is only expected to rise.
However, there is good news in our small packages! Okeanos has the sachet solution!

Nature doesn’t need our help packaging fruits and vegetables; your bananas, lemons, and garlic already come with protective barriers…and yet, when you buy them in the supermarket, they’re often wrapped in layers of plastic.
In the UK, Tesco Supermarkets are taking a futuristic approach to plastic pollution, bringing lasers into the vegetable aisle!
Using a technique called etching, lasers remove a portion of the top layer of the avocado’s skin and then tattoo the product’s information directly onto the avocado, replacing plastic packaging and stickers.
Tesco estimates they sell approximately 70 million avocados a year. The grocery chain is testing its new futuristic avocado packaging in 270 stores and anticipates the switch could save more than 20 million pieces of plastic packaging plus a million plastic stickers.

Ecoterra hits the shelves in Ecuador! Meet 1-gallon bottles Made From Stone!
Founded by Diana Sánchez and Daniel Escobar, Ecoterra has emerged as a leader in the sustainability industry in Ecuador. After noticing that many of the cleaning and personal care products they used daily were responsible for damaging health and contaminating the environment, they set out to develop products with natural and biodegradable ingredients. We’re thrilled to celebrate that this steadfast commitment now extends to their packaging with 1-gallon bottles Made From Stone.
Now boasting a significantly lower carbon footprint and less plastic, Ecoterra’s 18 different formulations ranging from detergent to shampoo are available this month across store shelves in Ecuador.

This month we’re celebrating Nicky Wyman, our Strategic Communications Director. Read on to learn about her journey into the world of sustainability.
Can you share a “Eureka!” moment when you realized the potential of Made From Stone’s technology?
I was fortunate to join our team at COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh. As one of the only private-sector technology companies present in the Climate Action Innovation Zone, we had an opportunity to shine. Over our two weeks in Egypt, it became evident that with looming EPR legislation, companies are desperate for solutions that are affordable, scalable, and immediate.
What is the most obvious sign of climate change where you live?
I split my time between New Jersey and Miami, and climate change is evident in both places. From increasingly hotter summers and milder winters in the Northeast to rapidly warming oceans and unprecedented rainstorms in Miami, it’s clear that we’re still headed in the wrong direction. We need to get a handle on global warming, and we need to do it quickly. The first step is effectively managing our emissions to keep us as close to that 1.5 C mark as possible.
What advice would you give to aspiring sustainability professionals who are looking to make a positive impact?
My background is in hospitality, so when I first stepped into this role, I had a lot to learn. The most important thing I’ve taken away from these past five years is that learning will always be a part of my role. The industry is constantly evolving, as is the language that those who work in Sustainability speak. Everyone, regardless of their level of expertise and work experience, is learning new things every day. Our podcast, Mastering Sustainability, speaks directly to this point. There’s so much about this industry that we’ve yet to master. Even if you’re a subject matter expert in one field, it will inevitably intersect with an area you need to learn more about. It’s thrilling to be part of an industry that’s fueled by innovation and education .
